Tweeten, Lewis and Mathilde (Andersen)(Morris Truman Tweeten) My parents Lewis and Mathilde (Andersen) Tweeten were homesteaders on the western prairies near Reeder, Adams Co. ND. They were the sod busters that changed the color of the earth amid locusts, draught, dust storms, cattle that sold for $10.00 a head, cattle drives to railroads, mining coal and building dams. They helped build a community where doctors, pastors, churches, schools and families grew. The beautiful sunsets, a prairie sea of grass, buttes, the solitude of a new land was theirs to treasure. We were the children of the prairie, walking to school where arrowheads were so plentiful we didn’t give them a second thought. The North Dakota blizzards, hail storms and prairie fires were just a part of life. Lewis and Mathilde (Andersen) Tweeten Lewis Tweeten, my father, was born 23 Sep 1879 on a farm near Hesper, IA on land purchased by my grandfather who emigrated to America in 1849. My father was the son of Ole Larsen and Mary (Flatin) Tweten. Ole emigrated from Notodden, Heddal, Telemark, Norway. Grandmother Mary Flatin Tweten emigrated to America in 1866 from Ness, Hallingdahl, Norway. My mother was Mathilde Ovidia Andersen born 7 Oct 1883 in HighlandvilleTwp., Winneshiek Co., the daughter of Severin Olai and Karen Christine (Moberg) Andersen. Her parents emigrated to America in 1880 from Bergen, Hord, Norway to Big Canoe area near Highlandville. My parents’ youth was spent in Highlandville where they attended school and church. As a young man my father Lewis ventured west and obtained a homestead (160 acres) near Reeder, Adams Co., ND. He spent several years there constructing a new house and farm buildings. He then returned to Iowa and spent some time here. In 1909 he returned to North Dakota with a young bride. The young couple stayed there for a while then returned again to Iowa to farm the Lars Berg farm in Winneshiek Co. In about 5 years the West seemed to call them again and they returned to the homestead to farm the 160 acres plus another section of land (640 acres) for a total of 700 acres. “We worked the land with our 1530 International tractor and a dozen horses.” It was there on the prairie my parents reared their family of 7 children: Mabel (m. Ambrose Buckmier); Otis Sydney; Leila (m. Grant Ingvalson); Esther (m. Roy Odell); Charlotte (m. Knute Roed; Gladys (m. Gilman Lundvedt) and Morris Truman (m. Geneva Berquam). Twenge, Ole Tollefson and Berit (Egge)(Hazel Wangsness and Wayne Wangsness) Ole Tollefson Twenge, or just Ole Tollefson (13 May 1833-28 Jun 1882), married Berit Egge (26 Oct 1838-6 Aug 1929) in 1858. Berit had come from Norway to America in 1854. Ole and Berit lived on a farm in Spring-field Twp. northeast of the intersection of Lincoln Highway and the Middle Calmar Road. Ole and Berit had 8 children: Berit, Tollef, Mary, Ole, Gertrude, John, Martha and Albert. The family had several members who would play music at barn dances in the area. Ole died as he rescued a daughter from a cistern they were trying to clean. There was gas in the cistern and he went down to get her out after she was overcome. He saved his daughter, but the gas got him before he could get himself out and the family was unable to lift him out. Berit (1859-1938) married Halvor Johnson and had one son, “Big John”. Big John never married. He belonged to the Gregg and Luren singing groups. Berit and Halvor lived near her parents. Tollef (1864-1948) married Sophia Bergan. They lived in Calmar Twp. Tollef and Sophia had 5 children: Ada Hillesland, Stella Syverson, Elmer, William and Roy. Mary (1866-1954) married Nels Haugen. Their children were: Ole, Bertha Clausen, Lettie, Inga, Theodore and Peter with whom they made their home. Ole (1870-1953) married Sophia Estrem in 1893. They lived near her parents and were the parents of Herbert, Blanche Anderson, Otto and Sadie Enga (lived in Des Moines). Gertrude (1873-1958) married Christopher Knutson in 1897. They had 3 children: Hubert, Olga Hjerleid and Helen Kiel. John (1876-1962) married Sophia Barlow and went to Devils Lake, ND to homestead. They endured harsh winters and 7 years with little crops. They had 3 sons: Orlando, Idor and Lawren. Martha (1878- 1973) married Ellend Wangsness in 1897. (See separate story) They were the parents of 4 children: Bertha, Henry, Marie and Elmer. Albert (1882-1966) was the youngest child of Ole and Berit Tollefson. He never married. He T-20 See the associated scan to compare with the published information. |
